We all know about the famous Banaue Rice Terraces but do you also know that there are 4 other similar rice terraces in Ifugao? These are the Batad rice terraces, Mayoyao rice terraces, Hapao rice terraces and Kiangan rice terraces. Among these four, we were fortunate enough to see Batad! The trail starts from the top of the mountain all the way down the Tappia waterfalls! This was my first time to trek and boy, it was soooo tiring! Before going down, be sure to rent these wooden sticks which will serve as your 3rd foot! There were 7 of us in the group (5 girls, my hubby + 1 guide).

Batad rice terraces is famous for it’s amphitheater – like mountains! It looks like stairs from afar but those steps have some crops planted on it.

About 1/3 down the trail, you will see this food hauz and souvenir shop. We ordered for our food so it would just be in time when we get back for lunch.

Here we are walking along the steps of the terraces or locally known as “pilapil”. I guess, you already have an idea on what kind of trail you will be taking! :)

After trekking down the steps, you will see this magnificent Tappia waterfalls! This is actually the tallest waterfalls that I’ve seen so far. My friends dipped for a while but unfortunately, we have to get back before it gets dark!

After going down for hours, you have to go up with the same route! Sheesh… My legs are literally trembling! As we continue going up, the rain started to pour! We don’t have any other choice but to get drenched! I can’t believe that we started trekking around 8am and ended at around 5pm! Remember the lunch that we ordered in the food hauz?! It turned out to be our merienda instead! :) If you will notice the prints on the souvenir shop, almost all of them would say, “I survived Batad!” Well, this is so true! :) This has been a remarkable experience for me! But this would be my first and last! It’s enough for me to say that I have experienced it! :) And as what the shirts say, I’m proud to say that I SURVIVED BATAD! :)

Banaue – Hiwang Village

One of the itineraries that you can do in Banaue is to visit Hiwang Village. Here, you can find traditional ethnic houses. If you will notice in this picture, the house is standing on stilts. This prevents rodents and snakes in entering their houses. According to our guide,  the animal skulls displayed around the house shows the social status of the family living inside. The more skulls you display, the more wealthy you are.

Banaue Rice Terraces

As I was browsing through my computer I came across some old photos of our adventure trips. So I decided to post it here. My friends and I visited Mountain province (Banaue – Sagada – Baguio) last March of 2007.  Banaue, Ifugao is one of the provinces in the Cordillera Administrative region in Luzon. It is famous for the Banaue Rice Terraces which is commonly referred to by Filipinos as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. This masterpiece has been around for centuries, passed on through generations and said that it was done with minimal use of machinery or mostly hand made.  You can go to the viewpoint if you just want to take pictures of the Rice Terraces. Try dining in one of their restaurants and enjoy this magnificent view.

How to get to Banaue:

BUS: Many bus companies and tour agencies have trips to Banaue. There are 3 ways to get to Banaue from Manila. Manila direct to Banaue. Manila to Baguio to Banaue, or the Manila, Bontoc, to Banaue trip. Each has its own interest. Autobus (Tel. No. +63 2 740-79-59), Dangwa Transco (Tel. No. +63 2 410-1991), Florida Bus Line (Tel. No. 02 731-53-58 or 02 743-3809),and Victory Bus Line (Tel. No. +63 2 833-0218)

Manila to Banaue – 2 bus companies (Florida & Autobus) have 1 trip daily which leaves Manila at around 10 pm. Bus fares are P450-P475. Both buses have terminals in Sampaloc Manila in the España area near the Sto. Tomas University. You can take the train to Legarda station then a pedicab to any of the two stations (fare: P20)

Manila-Solano, Nueva Vizcaya-Banaue – buses heading to Tuguegarao (e.g. Baliwag transit, Victory, etc.) pass by the town of Solano. Several jeepneys ply the Solano-Banaue route or the Solano-Lagawe, Ifugao route. From Lagawe, one can then take another jeepney to Banaue.

Manila-Tarlac-Solano-Banaue – buses heading for Baguio pass by Tarlac. Vizcaya liner plies the Tarlac-Solano route at 5 am.

by car: The distance between the Balintawak Cloverleaf in north Manila at the beginning of the North Luzon Expressway and the Welcome to Banaue sign is 332 km. The road is paved all the way to Banaue. Travel time can be as long as 9 hours due to the several blind curves through the mountains.

Astroboy – The Movie

astroboy

Went to watch Astroboy last week with my hubby and found out that it he has a dramatic story. :) Following their movie in 1962, this film is full of action, adventure and drama. It is a story of a robot boy who was created by a brilliant scientist named Dr. Tenma. This boy has superb powers like super strength, xray vison, super speed and he can also fly! He was created to replace Dr. Tenma’s son, Toby who died in an accident. He met a lot of friends along the way as he tries to find his place in this world. He soon finds out that his destiny is to be Metro City’s hero.

Actually, I was bored at first. Probably because we watched the movie after our shift. I think this film is not for kids though. They might not easily comprehend the moral of the story :)
